This is the decision that trips up more first-year beekeepers than any other. You know you need bees. You have the hive assembled. But should you buy a package or a nuc? Both start a colony. Both arrive in spring. Both cost real money. The choice between them affects how your first season unfolds, how likely the colony is to survive its first winter, and whether you will harvest any honey in year one. Most advice online boils down to "packages are cheaper, nucs are better." That is roughly true but not nearly specific enough to make a confident decision. This guide compares packages and nucs across eight dimensions that actually matter, walks through installation for each, and gives you a clear decision at the end.
What is a package of bees?
A package is a screened wooden or plastic box containing roughly 3 pounds of worker bees (about 10,000 to 12,000 individuals) shaken from donor hives, a separately caged mated queen the workers have never met, and a can of sugar syrup for feeding during transit. There is no comb, no brood, no pollen, and no stored honey. The bees and queen are strangers.
When you install a package, you are starting a colony from zero. The workers must accept the new queen (a process that takes 2 to 5 days while she is released through the candy plug in her cage), draw fresh comb on the foundation, and wait for the queen to begin laying. The first new workers will not emerge for about 21 days after the queen starts laying, and it takes roughly another week before those bees are old enough to forage. During that gap, the original package population shrinks through natural attrition (adult worker bees live about 6 weeks in summer), and the colony is at its most vulnerable.
What is a nuc?
A nucleus colony (nuc) is a small, functioning hive. A standard nuc contains 5 deep Langstroth frames pulled from an established colony: typically 2 to 4 frames of capped and open brood, 1 to 2 frames of honey and pollen stores, and a mated, laying queen who is already accepted by the workers on those frames. The bees are her offspring. They know her pheromone, she is already producing, and brood is already hatching.
When you install a nuc, you simply transfer the 5 frames into your hive body in the same order, add empty frames to fill the remaining slots, and close up. There is no queen-acceptance period. The colony is already growing. Understanding how the queen shapes colony behavior and brood production helps you appreciate why a nuc's established queen is such an advantage.

How do packages and nucs compare head to head?
Here are the eight dimensions that matter most, compared honestly.
Cost
A 3-pound package costs $160 to $175 in 2026. A 5-frame nuc costs $225 to $240. Nucs run roughly 30 to 40% more than packages. That price gap narrows considerably when you factor in the higher failure rate of packages (more on that below), because the cheapest bees are the ones that survive.
Availability and timing
Packages are produced at large scale in the southern US (mainly Georgia, California, and Texas) starting in early spring and can be shipped nationwide. They are available earlier in the season (March to April in most regions) and rarely sell out completely. Nucs are produced locally or regionally, are available later (April to May, sometimes June), and sell out faster because they take longer to produce. Ordering early, ideally by December or January, matters more for nucs than for packages.
Shipping
Packages ship well. The screened box is designed for postal or courier transit, and packages routinely travel across the country with acceptable survival rates. Nucs are almost always pickup only. Shipping 5 frames of live brood, honey, and a laying queen without damage is expensive and risky, which limits your nuc options to breeders within driving distance. If no local nuc producer serves your area, a package may be your only practical choice.
Queen acceptance
In a package, the queen is a stranger. She must be accepted by workers that did not raise her, which usually happens through the candy-plug release over 2 to 5 days. In roughly 1 to 5% of installations, the workers reject or kill the queen, leaving you queenless and scrambling for a replacement. In a nuc, the queen is already accepted, already laying, and already producing pheromone the workers recognize. Queen failure in a well-made nuc is rare. Managing queens, swarms, and colony splits is a skill that becomes more important once the colony is established, but the nuc removes the initial acceptance gamble entirely.
First-month timeline
A package colony spends its first 3 to 4 weeks drawing comb and waiting for the first generation of new brood to emerge. During that period, the adult population declines as original workers age out and die. This is the danger window: the colony is small, combless, storeless, and relying entirely on your feeding. A nuc colony skips this phase. It arrives with drawn comb, brood already emerging, stores already in place, and a population that is growing from day one. The practical difference is roughly 3 to 4 weeks of development time, which in a short-season climate can mean the difference between building enough population for winter and not.
First-winter survival
This is the statistic that should drive most purchasing decisions. Package colonies consistently show higher first-winter loss rates than nuc colonies. The exact numbers vary by region, year, and management, but the pattern holds across published surveys: nucs enter winter with larger populations, more stores, and queens that have been laying longer, all of which correlate with better overwintering. Treating Varroa mites before the winter bee generation matters equally for both packages and nucs, but a nuc's head start gives you more management runway. First-year honey
Most beginners should not expect a surplus honey crop in year one regardless of what they buy. That said, a strong nuc installed in April in a good nectar region can produce a modest surplus (20 to 40 pounds) if the flow is strong and the colony builds fast. A package colony installed at the same time is 3 to 4 weeks behind and almost never produces surplus in year one. If first-year honey matters to you, a nuc is the better bet, though leaving the honey for the bees is usually the smarter move heading into winter.
Hive compatibility
Packages work with any hive type: Langstroth, Warre, top-bar, Layens, or any custom configuration. You simply shake or pour the bees in. Nucs are built on specific frame sizes, almost always deep Langstroth frames. If your hive uses medium frames, top bars, or a non-standard configuration, a nuc will not transfer directly, and a package is the practical choice. Getting your hive set up correctly before the bees arrive avoids compatibility surprises on installation day.
How do you install each one?
Both installations are straightforward but differ in timing and technique.
Installing a package. Do it in late afternoon on a warm, calm day. Remove 4 to 5 frames from the center of the brood box. Mist the screen with sugar syrup. Pull out the syrup can and queen cage, confirm the queen is alive, then suspend her cage between two central frames with the candy plug facing down. Shake or pour the bees into the gap, replace the frames gently, place a feeder on top, and close the hive. Leave them alone for 3 to 5 days, then check that the queen has been released and is laying. Feeding new colonies affordably during this buildup is not optional: a package has zero stores and will starve without syrup.
Installing a nuc. Transfer the 5 frames into your brood box in the same order they sat in the nuc box. Fill the remaining slots with frames of foundation. Add a feeder, close up, and inspect in about a week. The queen is already free and laying, so there is no acceptance period. Feed 1:1 sugar syrup until the bees have drawn comb on at least 7 of the 10 frames.

What about overwintered nucs?
If a standard spring nuc is good, an overwintered nuc is better. These are nucs produced the previous summer or autumn and kept alive through winter by the breeder. They arrive in early spring with a proven queen (she has already survived one winter), a large, established population, and drawn comb full of stores. Overwintered nucs build faster than spring-made nucs and are the closest thing to a guaranteed strong start. The downside is price ($275 to $350 or more) and limited availability, since they require the breeder to invest time, feed, and winter management into stock they might lose. If a local breeder offers overwintered nucs, they are worth the premium.

So which should you buy?
Here is the decision in its simplest form.
Buy a nuc if you use standard deep Langstroth equipment, a local breeder is within driving distance, you can order early enough to secure stock, you live in a climate with a short season, or this is your first colony and you want the highest chance of success.
Buy a package if you use non-Langstroth hive types, no local nuc producer is available, you missed the nuc ordering window, you want to ship bees to a remote location, or budget is your primary constraint and you accept the higher risk.
Buy an overwintered nuc if you can find one, afford it, and want the strongest possible start.
