Before you can extract a single drop of honey, you have to get the bees off the frames. A full honey super holds 20,000 to 30,000 bees on a busy day, and those bees are not interested in leaving. How you clear them shapes the mood of the entire harvest: do it well and you carry bee-free supers to the honey house with calm bees behind you. Do it badly and you spend the afternoon fighting defensive bees, crushing stragglers in the extractor, and picking dead bees out of your honey. Four methods are widely used, each suited to a different scale, climate, and temperament. This guide covers all four, with the most detail on fume boards since they are the fastest option for most beekeepers.

What is a fume board and how does it work?

A fume board is a flat, hive-sized board with a dark (usually black) outer surface and an absorbent inner lining, typically felt or flannel. You apply a bee-safe repellent to the absorbent side, place the board on top of the honey super, and the sun heats the dark outer surface, which warms the repellent and releases its vapors downward into the super. The bees find the scent unpleasant and move down through the queen excluder into the brood box below. Within 5 to 10 minutes, the super is nearly or completely bee-free and ready to carry away.

The key mechanism is solar heat. The black surface of the fume board absorbs sunlight and raises the internal temperature by 5 to 8°C (10 to 15°F) above ambient, which volatilizes the repellent far more effectively than cool air would. This is why fume boards work best on warm, sunny days (above about 25°C / 77°F) and struggle on overcast or cool mornings. If conditions are not sunny, a different clearing method is a better choice. Knowing when the super is fully capped and ready to pull helps you time the harvest for a day when fume boards will actually work.

Which repellent should you use

Which repellent should you use?

Four products dominate the market, and the choice comes down to smell, organic certification, and effectiveness.

Fischer's Bee-Quick. A natural, food-grade repellent with a pleasant almond-like scent. It is approved for use in USDA Certified Organic and Certified Naturally Grown apiaries, making it the go-to choice for organic beekeepers. It works quickly on warm days but requires adequate heat to volatilize properly.

Honey-B-Gone. Another natural, pleasant-smelling option that works similarly to Bee-Quick. It is widely available from multiple suppliers and performs well in warm conditions.

Honey Robber. A butyric acid-based repellent that has a strong, unpleasant odor (some beekeepers describe it as rancid butter). It is extremely effective even in cooler conditions because butyric acid volatilizes at lower temperatures. The trade-off is the smell, which lingers on equipment and clothing.

Honey Bandit. A newer food-grade option with a milder smell than Honey Robber but similar effectiveness. It uses only food-grade ingredients and is designed as a less harsh alternative.

For most hobby beekeepers, Bee-Quick or Honey-B-Gone offers the best balance of effectiveness, pleasant scent, and safety. If you harvest on cooler days or need maximum speed across many hives, Honey Robber's stronger volatility makes it the practical choice despite the odor.

How do you use a fume board step by step?

Step one: choose the right day. Warm, sunny, with little wind. Ideal conditions are above 25°C (77°F) with direct sunlight. On overcast or cool days, the repellent does not volatilize well enough to clear the super.

Step two: preheat the board. Set the fume board in direct sunlight for a few minutes while you prepare the hive, black side up. A preheated board starts working faster once placed on the super.

Step three: lightly smoke the entrance. A few puffs of smoke at the entrance settles the guard bees and starts moving bees downward before the fume board goes on. Do not over-smoke, since heavy smoke taints honey flavor. A reliable smoker with clean fuel (burlap, pine needles, dried herbs) produces the right amount.

Step four: apply repellent. Spray or drizzle the repellent onto the felt side of the fume board in an X or S pattern. Focus on the edges and corners, where bees tend to cluster. Less is more: if bees start pouring out of the entrance in large numbers, you have applied too much. Remove the board, let excess product evaporate for a minute, and reapply lightly.

Step five: place the board. Remove the outer and inner covers. Set the fume board on top of the uppermost super, felt side down, rotated slightly so the corners of the frames are exposed. This allows the vapors to flow downward through the frames while giving bees an escape route at the corners.

Step six: wait. Five to 10 minutes is usually enough. Peek under the board after 5 minutes. If the super is mostly clear, remove it and stack the frames in a covered tub or onto a vehicle where bees cannot reach them. If bees remain, give it another 3 to 5 minutes. Do not leave the fume board on for more than 15 minutes, as prolonged exposure can taint the honey with the repellent's scent.

Step seven: repeat. If you have multiple supers on one hive, clear them one at a time from the top down. Reapply repellent between supers if the scent has faded.

What are the other methods for clearing bees?

Fume boards are fast but weather-dependent. Three alternatives work in any conditions.

Bee escapes

A bee escape is a one-way valve (Porter escape, triangle escape, or maze escape) fitted into a board placed between the brood box and the honey super 24 hours before harvest. Bees move down through the escape overnight to rejoin the cluster but cannot return to the super. By morning, the super is nearly empty.

Bee escapes are cheap ($5 to $10), chemical-free, and quiet. They work in any weather and at any time of year. The disadvantage is that they require a visit the day before harvest to install and another visit the next day to pull the supers. If you forget them for more than 48 hours, bees sometimes find their way back through. For small-scale beekeepers who plan ahead, escapes are an excellent primary method.

Brush and shake

The simplest approach: pull each frame, hold it over the open hive, and brush or shake the bees off with a soft bristle bee brush. One frame at a time, you clear the super and carry it away. No chemicals, no equipment beyond a brush, and it works in any weather.

The disadvantage is speed and bee temperament. Frame-by-frame clearing is slow for more than a few supers, and the repeated disturbance makes the bees progressively more defensive. Understanding why some bee breeds handle disturbance better than others can influence both your breed choice and your clearing method. This is the default method for beekeepers with 1 to 3 hives who do not want to invest in fume boards or escapes.

Leaf blower

Some beekeepers, particularly those with larger operations, use a leaf blower to blast bees off frames. You pull a super, tilt it at an angle, and blow the bees off each frame in a few seconds. It is fast, chemical-free, and works in any weather.

The downside is that it is loud, forceful, and stressful for the bees. It can also damage delicate new comb if the airflow is too strong. Most extension services consider it effective but aggressive, and it is best suited to experienced beekeepers comfortable with the technique.

How do you choose the right clearing method?

Match it to your operation and conditions.

1 to 3 hives, planned harvest. Bee escapes installed the evening before. Chemical-free, gentle, and requires no special equipment beyond the escape board.

4 to 15 hives, warm sunny day. Fume boards with Bee-Quick or Honey-B-Gone. Fast, efficient, and the repellent scent dissipates quickly.

Any hive count, overcast or cool day. Bee escapes (planned 24 hours ahead) or brush-and-shake (immediate). Fume boards will not work well without solar heat.

15 or more hives, speed is priority. Fume boards with Honey Robber for maximum volatility, or a leaf blower for chemical-free speed. Having the right extraction equipment ready at the other end of the workflow keeps the momentum going.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Leaving the fume board on too long. More than 15 minutes risks tainting the honey with repellent scent. Set a timer.

Over-applying repellent. A light application is all that is needed. If bees are flooding out the entrance, you have used too much. Remove, air out, reapply lightly.

Using fume boards on cool days. Below about 20°C (68°F) without direct sun, the repellent does not volatilize well enough. Switch to bee escapes or brush-and-shake.

Forgetting to cover cleared supers. Bees from your hive and robber bees from neighboring hives will find exposed honey within minutes. Carry cleared supers to a sealed vehicle or covered tub immediately. Weakened or stressed colonies are especially vulnerable to robbing, which is one more reason keeping Varroa loads low throughout the season matters even on harvest day.

Once the supers are cleared and the honey is extracted, the leftover cappings wax is worth saving for candles, balms, and other valuable byproducts.

Using naphthalene or unapproved chemicals. Only use products specifically designed and approved for bee removal. Naphthalene and other improvised repellents are toxic to bees and leave harmful residues in wax and honey.
