Catching a wild swarm is one of the most satisfying things in beekeeping. Free bees, locally adapted genetics, and the proof that you set up a hive so well that scout bees chose it over every tree hollow and wall cavity in the neighborhood. It is also one of the most misunderstood. People smear lemongrass oil on a box, set it in the yard, and wonder why nothing shows up. The truth is that attracting bees to a hive follows specific, well-researched principles: the right cavity size, the right scent, the right height, the right timing, and the right surroundings. Get those five things right and your odds jump sharply. Get one wrong and the scouts move on.

What is a bait hive and how do you set one up?
A bait hive is simply an empty hive body or box placed in a location and condition designed to attract scout bees. The most cited research on bait hive design comes from Thomas Seeley at Cornell University, whose field experiments identified the features scouts prefer: a cavity volume of about 40 liters (roughly the size of a single 10-frame deep Langstroth box), an entrance of 10 to 15 square centimeters (about 1.5 to 2.5 square inches) near the bottom of the cavity, and a location elevated 3 to 5 meters (10 to 16 feet) off the ground. Seeley's work showed that bait hives matching these criteria caught swarms at significantly higher rates than ones that deviated.
In practice, most beekeepers use a spare 10-frame deep box with a solid bottom board, a few old frames (three to five drawn combs work best), and a reduced entrance. One or two frames of dark, drawn brood comb inside the bait hive provide a complex cocktail of wax, propolis, and pheromone traces that no synthetic lure fully replicates. The downside is that old comb also attracts wax moths, so deploy it only during swarm season and remove it afterward.
The second is a commercial swarm lure. These are synthetic versions of Nasonov pheromone, the scent worker bees release from a gland on the abdomen to signal "come here" to flying swarmmates. Research suggests a bait hive with a scent lure is up to five times more likely to attract a swarm than one without. Products like Swarm Commander and Lure All are widely available and last several weeks in the field.
The third is lemongrass essential oil. Its chemical profile is close to Nasonov pheromone (both contain citral and geraniol), which is why beekeepers have used it for decades. A few drops on a cotton ball placed inside the hive works well. Refresh it every week or two as the scent fades. You can also rub a thin coat of melted beeswax inside the box and around the entrance to add another familiar scent layer.
When should you set out bait hives?
Timing depends on your climate. Swarm season follows the spring buildup: colonies that overwintered successfully grow fast once forage appears, and the urge to swarm peaks when the hive gets congested. In mild climates (southern US, coastal Australia, Mediterranean Europe), that can start as early as January or February. In colder regions (northern US, UK, northern Europe), April through June is the main window. A safe rule is to have bait hives deployed two to three weeks before your area's first major nectar flow, because that is when colony populations are expanding fastest.
If you manage your own hives, early spring is also the time to check for swarming signs, since splitting strong colonies before they swarm on their own gives you more control and more bees. Any swarm you catch from a neighbor's hive or a feral colony is a bonus.
What do you do once a swarm moves in?
Check your bait hives every few days during swarm season. A swarm has arrived when you see heavy, purposeful traffic at the entrance with bees carrying pollen in. Give them at least 48 hours to settle before you touch anything. After that, suit up and do a quick inspection: confirm the queen is present and laying (look for eggs), check that comb building has started, and assess the population size.

Good early-season plants include willow, crocus, and fruit trees (apple, cherry, plum). Mid-season winners are clover, lavender, borage, and wildflower mixes. Late-season standbys are sunflower, goldenrod, aster, and ivy. Native wildflowers almost always outperform ornamental cultivars for nectar and pollen volume. Avoid anything treated with neonicotinoid pesticides, and if you spray for other pests, do it at dusk when foragers are inside the hive.
