Installing a package or nuc is the exciting part. What happens in the three to six weeks after installation is what determines whether the colony thrives or struggles into summer. A new colony has no surplus food. A package has zero: no comb, no honey, no pollen. A nuc has a few frames of stores, but they are consumed fast as the queen ramps up laying and the population grows. In both cases, the bees need you to feed them until they can feed themselves, and getting the feed type, ratio, feeder, and timing right is the difference between a colony that builds steadily and one that stalls, starves, or draws comb so slowly it never catches up.
This guide covers what to feed, how to mix it, which feeder to use, how long to keep feeding, and when to stop. It also covers the mistakes that cost first-year beekeepers the most.
Why do new colonies need feeding?
Two reasons, both tied to energy. First, bees need carbohydrates (sugar) to fuel every activity in the hive: foraging, fanning, nursing brood, guarding, and building comb. In nature, that energy comes from nectar. A freshly installed colony may land during a nectar flow, but it may not, and even when forage is available, a small colony with limited foragers cannot bring in enough to cover both daily needs and comb construction simultaneously. Second, building comb is extremely energy-intensive. Bees consume roughly 6 to 7 pounds of honey (or the sugar equivalent) to secrete a single pound of beeswax. Without supplemental feeding, a package colony drawing comb on bare foundation can take weeks longer to fill a brood box, and every day of delay means fewer brood cycles before winter. Choosing a bee breed matched to your climate affects how fast the colony draws comb, since some strains build faster than others.
A nuc arrives with drawn comb and stores, which gives it a head start, but it still burns through those reserves quickly as the queen expands laying and the colony outgrows its original five frames. Comparing packages and nucs side by side helps set feeding expectations before the bees arrive.

What should you feed and in what ratio?
The primary feed is sugar syrup, made from plain white granulated sugar (sucrose) dissolved in water. The ratio changes by purpose and season.
1:1 syrup (one part sugar to one part water by weight). This is what you feed after spring installation. It mimics the sugar concentration of natural nectar and stimulates the bees to draw comb, rear brood, and forage. To make it, dissolve 1 kilogram of sugar in 1 kilogram (1 liter) of warm water, or 5 pounds in 5 pints. Stir until dissolved. Do not boil, since boiling can caramelize the sugar and produce hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is toxic to bees in high concentrations. Let it cool to room temperature before filling the feeder.
2:1 syrup (two parts sugar to one part water by weight). This is heavier, more concentrated syrup used in late summer and autumn to help bees build winter stores. It requires warm water to dissolve (sugar does not dissolve easily at this concentration in cold water). You typically do not use 2:1 syrup right after installation unless you are installing very late in the season and need the colony to store quickly.
Do not use brown sugar, raw sugar, molasses, or high-fructose corn syrup. Brown sugar and molasses contain impurities that cause dysentery in bees. Plain white granulated sugar is the safest and cheapest option.
Adding a small amount of apple cider vinegar (about 1 tablespoon per gallon) lowers the pH to roughly match honey's natural acidity, which some beekeepers believe helps the bees process the syrup more easily. It is not strictly necessary, but it does no harm and may discourage mold growth in the feeder.
Should you feed protein too?
New colonies benefit from a pollen patty placed on the top bars of the brood frames, especially if natural pollen is scarce at the time of installation. Pollen provides the protein, lipids, and amino acids that nurse bees need to produce royal jelly and feed larvae. Without adequate protein, brood rearing slows even if carbohydrate feed is abundant.
Place a small patty (200 to 300 grams) directly on the top bars above the brood nest. Replace it when consumed. If the bees ignore it, natural pollen is likely sufficient and you can remove it. Do not leave uneaten patties in the hive for more than a week or two, since they can attract small hive beetle larvae in warm climates. Which type of feeder should you use?
Four types are widely available. Each has trade-offs.
Entrance feeder (Boardman feeder). A glass or plastic jar inverted over a small tray that slides into the hive entrance. Cheap ($5 to $10), easy to check and refill without opening the hive. The downsides are serious: the syrup is exposed at the entrance, which can trigger robbing from neighboring hives, and the jar holds only about 1 quart (roughly 1 liter), which a hungry colony empties in a day. Best for temporary use or when robbing pressure is low.
Frame feeder (division board feeder). A hollow frame-shaped container that replaces one frame inside the hive. It holds 1 to 2 gallons and feeds the bees internally, away from robbers. The downside is that bees can drown in the syrup unless you add a float (a piece of wood, a ladder insert, or a strip of mesh). You also need to open the hive to refill it, which means disturbing the colony.
Top feeder (hive-top feeder). A large reservoir that sits on top of the brood box under the outer cover. It holds 1 to 4 gallons and feeds internally. Bees access the syrup through screened slots in the center. Top feeders are the most practical choice for new colonies because they hold enough syrup for several days, do not trigger robbing, and can be refilled by lifting the outer cover without pulling frames. The downside is cost ($20 to $40) and weight when full.
Baggie feeder. A zip-lock bag filled with syrup, laid flat on the top bars, with a few small slits cut in the upper surface. Bees drink through the slits. Cheap, simple, internal, and does not require any special equipment. The downside is limited capacity (about 1 gallon per bag) and messiness if the bag tears. Many beekeepers swear by baggie feeders for their simplicity. They are a strong option for affordable, low-fuss colony feeding.
For most new installations, a top feeder or frame feeder is the best all-around choice. Entrance feeders work in a pinch but invite trouble if other colonies are nearby.
How long should you feed after installation?
The answer differs for packages and nucs.
Packages. Feed 1:1 syrup continuously from the day of installation until the bees have drawn comb on at least 7 to 8 of the 10 frames in the first brood box. This typically takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the colony's size, the weather, and whether a nectar flow is underway. Add a pollen patty for the first 2 to 3 weeks if natural pollen is limited. Once the first box is mostly drawn, you can slow feeding and begin assessing whether the colony is strong enough to build population for the nectar flow on its own.
Nucs. Feed 1:1 syrup from installation until the bees have drawn comb on the empty frames you added alongside the original nuc frames. This usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, since the colony starts with drawn comb and an established brood cycle. A pollen patty is less often needed for nucs (they usually have pollen stores on their frames), but add one if your area is in a pollen dearth.
In both cases, the answer to "how long" is not a fixed number of days. It is: feed until the bees stop needing it, which you judge by comb progress and incoming forage, not the calendar.
When should you stop feeding?
This is the question most guides skip, and getting it wrong causes real problems. Stop feeding when any of these three conditions are met.
The nectar flow starts. Once bees are bringing in enough natural nectar to sustain comb building and brood rearing, supplemental feeding is redundant. You will know the flow is on when you see bees returning with swollen, shiny abdomens, new white wax appearing on frames, and the hive gaining weight.
You add honey supers for harvest. Never feed syrup with honey supers on the hive. Bees will store sugar syrup in super frames alongside real honey, contaminating your harvest. Remove feeders before adding supers and do not put them back until supers are off. Knowing when the honey super is ready and when to pull it keeps the timing clean.
The colony has enough stores. If the bees are capping honey in the brood box and the comb is fully drawn, they do not need syrup even if no supers are on. Overfeeding can backfill the brood nest with syrup, leaving the queen no room to lay, which suppresses population growth, the opposite of what you want.
What feeding mistakes cost first-year beekeepers the most?
Not feeding enough, early enough. A package colony that goes unfed for even a few days after installation can lose critical comb-building momentum. Have syrup ready before the bees arrive, not after.
Feeding with honey supers on. This contaminates your honey with sugar syrup and can make an entire harvest unsellable. Remove feeders when supers go on, every time.
Using the wrong sugar. Brown sugar, raw sugar, and powdered sugar with cornstarch all cause digestive problems in bees. White granulated sugar only.
Leaving entrance feeders exposed during robbing season. An entrance feeder on a weak colony near strong hives is an invitation for robbing. Use internal feeders (top or frame) whenever possible.
Ignoring protein. Syrup gives carbohydrates but zero protein. A colony fed only syrup cannot rear healthy brood. A pollen patty in the first few weeks closes the gap.
