Slow-Release Varroa Treatment: Aluen CAP Oxalic Acid Strips for Australian Beekeepers
The Aluen CAP Slow-Release Oxalic Acid Strips are an in-hive oxalic acid treatment designed to help manage Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies. The strips use a slow-release matrix to provide controlled exposure over a 42-day treatment period, making them suitable for use while brood is present according to the product directions. Oz Armour
Each strip contains 10 g of oxalic acid dihydrate, with the single pack supplied as a 2,280 g carton containing 60 strips. This format provides a practical treatment option for beekeepers managing individual colonies as well as larger apiaries.
Slow-Release Oxalic Acid for Varroa Management
Aluen CAP is designed around a controlled-release approach, allowing oxalic acid to be delivered gradually inside the hive rather than applied as a single treatment dose.
The product is intended to form part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, where monitoring is used to determine when treatment is required. This makes regular Varroa surveillance an important part of deciding when and how to use the strips.
Simple Placement Across the Brood Box
Application varies according to hive size. For 8–10 frame hives, the directions specify four strips placed across the top bars of frames 2, 4, 6 and 8. For 5–6 frame nucleus hives, two strips are placed across the top bars of frames 2 and 4.
The strips should remain in place for 42 days, after which they must be removed and discarded. They are single-use and must not be reused. The product directions also specify using Aluen CAP only once per year and not for two consecutive treatment periods.
Designed for Responsible Hive Treatment
Aluen CAP is intended for use when Varroa monitoring indicates that treatment is needed. The product information states that it can be used while brood is present and specifies a zero-day honey withholding period after removal. Always follow the current Australian product label and directions for use.
Handling, Storage and Disposal
Aluen CAP is listed as a registered animal-treatment poison. When handling the strips, the product directions specify wearing suitable protective clothing, gauntlet-length chemical-resistant gloves and goggles, and working in a well-ventilated area.
Keep the original container closed, store it below 30°C and away from light, and discard unused strips 24 hours after opening the pouch. Unused product and packaging should be disposed of according to local requirements.
